After his mother leaves the family and his father lands in jail, Markuss ends up at his grandmother’s house in the countryside. Anete, a girl from a good family, offends Markuss and he takes her as prisoner. As he dreams about the return of his parents, Markuss begins harming himself by carving initials on his arm and making surreal, eerie drawings of the neighbours in their small village. With these drawings he is following his father’s dream of becoming a famous painter, but he also witnesses a gruesome incident at the neighbour’s house. The only real friend Markuss has is the old Sailor, who reveals his secret to the boy shortly before he dies. A ray of hope enters the story when Markuss’ mother returns shortly before he receives his punishment.
